Krav Maga is an Israeli martial art, founded by Imi Lichtenfeld, which is taught to the regular and special forces in Israel. Its name literally translates as 'close combat', and the aim is to be as fast and efficient as possible. It's a living martial art, which is updated constantly. You can read a longer and more thorough article on the subject here.
I started learning it in the first week of February of 2011, shortly after the last time I willingly and knowingly ate animal products (December 31st 2010).
I'd wanted to learn some kind of martial art for a while. My parents were akido instructors, and had tried to teach me that, but it just didn't work for me. I'd wanted to learn kickboxing.
I chose Krav Maga because they focus on what works, and they will, sometimes, exhaust you, or dizzy you, and then make you fight. It had occurred to me, that, should I need to defend myself, I would be drunk and in high heels, so this appealed to me (incidentally, kick in the balls with stilettos = puncture wound. True story, happened to a girl I know).
Krav Maga focuses on short bursts of energy, which lets you disable an attacker, or multiple attackers, and escape quickly. It's fun, and a great workout, but it is also effective.
It has a lot in common with Parkour, the main difference being that, in PK, your goal is to get from A to B, while in Krav, your goal is to take A down, and then get to B. They both aim for efficiency, and for reliance on your body (which you really ought to take care of).
It involves a lot of push ups, crunches, and squats. Sometimes, the instructors get creative with them. It's still fun!
